"Revolving Door"

Sand Blasters II 2006

Location: San Diego

Date: Sept. 2006

Team: Trowel and Error - with Kirk Rademaker

Particulars: So we traded partners since Sand Blasters I - for no other reason than love, I reckon. Our first sculpture was designed to make best use of the square poundup -- a revolving door that was intended to tell a story (but I'm not going to tell it here becuase I may want to take another stab at this idea some day.)

If you watched the show you would have noticed that we had a (minor) collapse in the first minutes of building, with Gerry Kirk solemnly intoning for the camera that we had put too much weight on it. Well, I like and respect Gerry but that is bullshit. It was a bad poundup, pure and simple. Anyways, the point is moot because minutes after Jill shot this photo, the sculpture was blown to smithereens in the first blast of the contest.

We were thrilled, to say the least.

"Instrumental"

Sand Blasters II (post blast)

Location: San Diego

Date: Sept. 2006

Team: Trowel and Error - with Kirk Rademaker

Particulars: After experiencing the extraordinary good luck of getting blasted first, we were very energized to build sculpture #2. We didn't have a real plan - we just knew we were going to build a castle composed of musical instrument parts... the kind of free-form team thing that Kirk thrives upon. (Me? Not so much, but I am trying to adapt.)

I think it was really lovely for how fast we had to go, and I guess the judges agreed as they bestowed us with second place.
