New Butterfly Garden
Great article in the Herald this morning about the butterfly garden that Shane Wilson and his crew are going to create in my neighborhood (corner of Gulf and Saturn.) This vacant beachfront lot is too small to build on and as I understand it the person who donated it to the town attached a lot of stipulations on what could not be done with it (no parking, no construction, etc.) so I have long hoped that somebody would come along and make it pretty.
Well it looks like my wish is going to come true. Shane is soliciting help and plants from residents and while I will be out of town on the 15th, I will see if I can at least come up with a plant or two and - assuming this garden will be an ongoing project - pledge to put in some shovel time on some future date.
I think this is a fabulous use of this property and urge the local butterfly lovers to jump in and lend a hand if at all possible. Good luck, Shane - can't wait to see what you do with that choice spot!

Is this a permenant project? If so, I'll donate. Let me know.... I'd love to see less building and more greenspace in the area.
Best Island news I have heard in a long while. This kind of space on the Island is so sorely needed. I cannot help physically, but I would be pleased to contribute financially a bit for plant purchases or whatever. I need direction for such. Thanks, Will
Yes, this is planned to be a permant project. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and is needed.
To donate time - July 15 (starting at 8:00am) is the tentative date (this is provided that there is promised dirt delivered.)
To donate money - make checks payable to Tree of Life Foundation specifying the Butterfly Garden.
To donate plants - call me at 761-5108.
I would like to use this opportunity to "gather the community together." Suntide II is providing food and water.
We could use some more corporate sponsors as we would like to be able to buy some "big rocks" for the landscaping.

This is one of the more important urban plant projects on the Island, so let's all support it. It's not just for the butterflies but us as well, the locals, tourists, and everybody. Shane please call Paul Johnson of the Texas Forestry Service in Weslaco and I bet they would help with some freebies and advice - plus Paul loves it out here!
Now as to rocks, are you serious? The ones at the jetties came from Marble Falls up by Austin and the ones at Galveston jetties came all the way from Vinalhaven, Maine. Maybe we could get some trucker to bring some down ...

Report: It was very, very, very hot--but regardless, we had a great turnout -- with volunteers coming all the way from Los Fresnos, San Benito and Harlingen! (Whom we greatly thank!!!) Now if it will just rain. Thanks Shane and your students for pulling it together. It's only the beginning.
This is great everyone. I have been out of town, but keep me in mind for future workdays.
